There are so few things that I love photographing than an in-home newborn session on film.
If you’ve been to the blog any time lately, you’ve probably noticed a huge increase in newborn sessions! It’s been such a joy of mine over the past few months to start transitioning from shooting exclusively weddings. Since most of my couples are now starting families of their own, it is really natural to start incorporating families!
When fellow photographer Andrew asked me to photograph these beautiful memories with his firstborn, it was definitely a nerve-wracking moment. I am so incredibly proud of this session for so many reasons. Mostly, it’s because of the fact that it was so far out of my comfort zone.
Capturing a newborn session for another photographer is definitely a high-stress situation, but these three made it really easy! As someone who grew up flipping through family albums, I know how important these photos will be. It is such an incredible feeling to think of Zoe growing up and having these photos to mark her joining her parents family.
So much of the joy of this shoot is the moody feelings that come from photographing with Ilford 3200.
I absolutely love the intimate vibe brought on by photographing this session on medium format film. This newborn session took place on a particularly rainy day, which meant that black and white film was a perfect choice. Photovision Prints developed these so beautifully! Something about the heavy grain in these photos feels really timeless to me.
Thank you so much to Emma, Andrew, and Zoe for giving me the immense honour of photographing your first ever family session. I can’t wait to share the rest of these, but for now here is a tiny glimpse at our afternoon together!
